Unboxing my Marvel Phase Two box set

My Marvel Phase Two box set arrived yesterday! 😀 It’s 11 days late, but at least it arrived. (Plus Amazon gave me a $10 goodwill refund because of the delay in shipping, so I didn’t mind all that much.) I pre-ordered it way back in July 2015, as I’ve been waiting for Disney to come up with a Phase Two package ever since I bought the Phase One box set two and a half years ago. Phase Three will be a four-year wait, since we have to wait till after Avengers: Infinity War – Part II comes out in 2019.

(I wrote this in 2015, so this was before Marvel decided to drop the Part 1 & 2, and call Avengers 4 something else. Remember all the internet speculation about the title of the movie up until the first trailer for Endgame dropped?)

Marvel Phase One Limited Edition Box Set

Here’s how my Marvel Phase One box set looked when I unboxed it back when it first arrived. It cost me US$158.47 when I bought it in April 2013. Unfortunately, it costs about 3 times as much now, since they’ve stopped producing it.

Included in Phase One are the Blu-ray versions of:

  • Iron Man
  • The Incredible Hulk
  • Iron Man 2
  • Thor
  • Captain America: The First Avenger
  • The Avengers
  • Plus a top-secret Bonus Disc which includes the making of the Avengers end-credits Shawarma scene (filmed on the night after the Avengers premiere), never-before-seen deleted scenes, extended scenes, featurettes, animatics and more from each film

In fact, the whole briefcase glows when you open it. The plastic white cube is supposed to be the Tesseract.
Marvel Phase One box set Blu-ray disc covers
Cool art on the Blu-ray disc covers. The art continues on the back of the covers, but I didn’t take photos. All six Phase One films are included, from Iron Man to The Avengers, plus a disc of bonus features.
Marvel Phase One box set dossier
A dossier on the Avengers’ profiles.
Marvel Phase One box set S.H.I.E.L.D. file
The black S.H.I.E.L.D. file has Coulson’s namecard and a briefing on The Tessarect. It’s a replica of what Nick Fury gave to Steve to read when he recruited him in the boxing gym at the beginning of The Avengers.

Marvel Phase One box set Cap's skinny photo and trading cards
Inside is Cap’s old photo when he was skinny, Captain America trading cards, the picture of Peggy he put in his compass, the monkey drawing he drew despondently when he was made to do the U.S.O. shows to sell war bonds, and got mocked by the troops when he visited them.
Marvel Phase One box set Tony's file
Tony’s file, with the newspaper clipping of Iron Man’s first public appearance after fighting Iron Monger, and blueprints of Mark I.
Marvel Phase One box set Tony's napkin press release
In true Tony style, a “press release” written on a used napkin and signed by him.
Marvel Phase One box set Thor's file and Bruce's file
Thor’s file on the left (the small town that Thor took place in is Puente Antiguo); and Bruce’s file on the right — filed by Natasha because she was sent to recruit him.

Marvel Phase Two Amazon Exclusive Edition Box Set

And here’s my Phase Two box set, which I received in December 2015. The highlight is the Orb of Morag and Infinity Stone from Guardians of the Galaxy. There’s also a folder like the one Natasha passed Steve at the end of Captain America: The Winter Soldier; except instead of Bucky’s file, this one contains a mishmash of memorabilia from the Phase Two movies. And of course, all the movies from Iron Man 3 to Ant-Man in Blu-ray.

The box set cost me US$174.99. I pre-ordered it at US$200+ in July 2015, but Amazon had a price guarantee where they’d give me the lowest price if it dropped anytime before the actual release date. Including the US$10 refund, the final price was US$164.99. Which is a steal, since now it costs twice as much as it’s limited edition.

Films in Phase Two:

  • Iron Man 3
  • Thor: The Dark World
  • Captain America: The Winter Soldier
  • Guardians of the Galaxy
  • Avengers: Age of Ultron
  • Ant-Man
  • Plus a bonus disc which includes never-before-seen deleted & extended scenes, the complete set of Marvel One-Shot films and Commentary, From Here to Infinity: Phases 2 and 3 of the M.C.U., Tag Scenes: A Making-Of, Screen Test with Chris Pratt and Dave Bautista and more

Marvel Phase Two Box Set Orb of Morag
The box is very tricky to take apart. Here’s the Orb.

You can twist it open. The piece of paper is just instructions for changing the battery for the light inside.

So basically this is the package. The Phase Two disc covers also have cool art by the same artist who did the Phase One disc covers.

Without lighting, it’s just a purple plastic pebble.
Marvel Phase Two Box Set Bucky's file and Tony's tattoos
Some of the memorabilia stuffed into Bucky’s file holder. I can recognise most of them, except for the J.D. Canoe Rental Dolores River postcard. I don’t recall river rafting in any of the Phase Two movies. :S (Update: Google just told me it’s from the T-shirt that young Peter Quill wears in Guardians of the Galaxy, and later donned by a one-night-stand that adult Peter forgot about.)
Also, there are tattoo sheets of Tony’s face (seen on Tony’s superfan Gary in Iron Man 3) and the Mandarin’s symbol.

Marvel Phase Two Box Set Tony's formula
The formula he wrote on the back and left for Maya Hansen the morning after they slept together, which helped her come up with Extremis.

Stark Industries post-it notes which of course I’m never going to use.
Marvel Phase Two Box Set Anthony's wing
Ant-hony’s wing preserved (Scott’s trusted ant steed in Ant-Man, until it was killed by a stray bullet.)
Marvel Phase Two Box Set Luis' fake security badge
Luis’ fake security badge to get into Pym Technologies. Michael Peña was so funny in that role. 😀
Marvel Phase Two Box Set STRIKE team badge
The STRIKE team badge. It’s the team Cap led in Winter Soldier, until it turned out they were all working for Hydra.
Marvel Phase Two Box Set Quinjet bumper sticker
The bumper sticker on the Quinjet in Age of Ultron.
Marvel Phase Two Box Set Scott's Baskin Robbins name tag
Scott’s name tag for the very brief period he worked in Baskin Robbins.
Marvel Phase Two Box Set Bucky's file
The rest of the memorabilia in Bucky’s file, including a gold-foiled page from the book of the Dark Elves from Thor: The Dark World.
Marvel Phase Two Box Set Bucky's file
Picture of Bucky cyrogenically frozen, and a newspaper clipping of Howard and Maria Stark’s death, probably because the Winter Soldier killed them. Plus what is apparently an ancient picture from the Morag vault in Guardians of the Galaxy, though I’ve never seen it before.
Marvel Phase Two Box Set Sokovia Accords
The Sokovia Accords that will play a huge role in Captain America: Civil War.

Marvel Phase Three box set?

I’ve been searching on Amazon periodically since Spider-Man: Far from Home (which is the last of Phase Three) came out on home entertainment, hoping for news of a Marvel Phase Three limited edition box set, but no luck yet.

Phase Three movies include:

  • Captain America: Civil War
  • Doctor Strange
  • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
  • Spider-Man: Homecoming
  • Thor: Ragnarok
  • Black Panther
  • Avengers: Infinity War
  • Ant-Man and the Wasp
  • Captain Marvel
  • Avengers: Endgame
  • Spider-Man: Far from Home

I’ve been waiting 4+ years to own these movies. :S I hope there’ll be one! And that it includes a high quality collectible like the Infinity Gauntlet. (The orb of Morag felt kinda cheap and plasticky.) I would hate for my collection to be incomplete, even though Blu-ray may be going the way of the VCD and VHS, now that streaming is on the rise. ?
