When I delve into a movie fandom, as I recently did for The Hunger Games because I was so excited to watch it, I go all out to discover every single thing I can about it by hunting down all the interviews/clips/articles/whatever that the actors do during their press tour. (It’s insane, and takes up way more of your life than is advisable. I’m pretty sure you can throw me a standard question for the cast now and I will be able to tell you what they will say.)
As a result, here are my top 5 picks of interviews and videos related to The Hunger Games and its stars, culled from two weeks’ worth of waiting for the movie to be released.
The Hunger Games Honest Trailer:
I’ve brought it up before in a previous post reviewing the first movie, but this trailer is too funny to not put in here. Most of its criticism is spot-on, and really: after watching the excellent, better-executed second adaptation, I feel more than ever that the first one was “poorly directed”, and I am increasingly astonished that it earned over $400 million in the US alone.
The Onion’s spoof review of Catching Fire:
It’s fairly stupid (plus I completely disagree with the reviewer’s views on the hotness of the Twilight actors), but I have to admit that the first thing I thought after coming out of the theatre of The Hunger Games last year was everything that he said about Peeta and Gale.
Sesame Street parody: “The Hungry Games – Catching Fur”
“Why so finnicky, Finnicky?” This parody is cuteness overload. The writers for Sesame Street have channelled their love for The Hunger Games into a brilliant piece that melds the two pop culture juggernauts, bringing joy to lovers of both. (Peeta as a pita!)
I never knew that Jon Stewart hardly prepares for his guest interviews. Jennifer Lawrence looked so taken aback that he didn’t know anything about the movie, I’m certain she wanted to say “What the f— is going on?” at one point.
On one hand, you could say that Jon is being unprofessional, though he can get away with it by virtue of his popularity — and I really hate to say that, because I like him very much. On the other hand, it could be a gimmick, and he could have been giving her a break on the last day of her press tour to just hang out and talk nonsense.
Whatever it is, it made for one of the most haphazard interviews I’ve ever seen on a talk show.
MTV did an entire special with the cast to promote Catching Fire, and Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth show off how sibling-like their relationship is. It’s adorable.
Fandango’s interview with Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson:
Both actors are just too cute together! And Jennifer Lawrence knows it! Her excitement at winning movie tickets and getting all the answers right is so comical.
