The trailer for Jack Ryan: Shadow One is finally out! Its name has been changed to Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (though frankly, I feel neither title is great); but regardless of that, the trailer looks ROCKIN’.
I’ve previously listed it as one of my most anticipated films coming in the next three months. Based on Tom Clancy’s novels about CIA analyst Jack Ryan — but not any specific plot from his books — it stars Chris Pine as the titular character who uncovers a Russian terrorist plot against America, and is immediately upgraded to operative status. Keira Knightley plays his girlfriend/fiancee/wife(?); Kevin Costner, his mentor; and Kenneth Branagh (who also directs), the villain.
What can I say? It’s action-packed like all such movies are, and it looks exciting. There’s also a lovers’ tiff midway through when Keira Knightley’s character (who looks *gorgeous* btw) finds out that Jack has been lying to her about his job for the past three years, and is understandably angry about it — though not to Kevin Costner. “This is geopolitics, not couples therapy,” he says dispassionately whilst watching them argue.
I loved Kenneth Branagh’s version of Thor, so I expect no less of this action thriller. Plus, he looks appropriately menacing in the trailer, though his Russian accent is hard to understand.
Coming on the heels of Tom Clancy’s death on Tuesday, it might seem as though the studio is taking advantage of his death to drum up publicity for the film (which still might be the case, a little), but the truth is that the trailer is LONG overdue for a December 25 release — if that is still going according to plan. The first poster came out only a day before the trailer did.
But who cares about politically incorrect timing. I’m just happy to see that Paramount has apparently *not* forgotten about this film, despite what it seemed a few days ago.
